How Can A Old Unused Computer Result In Increased Editing Productivity?

How many programs does an audio engineer have open on their computer? Too many to have the best efficiency in many cases. One way to increase productivity is by using that old computer from 2001 they have kept around for whatever reason. That computer can benefit productivity, and it does not have to have internet. Commonly, a computer will have a word processing, a spreadsheet program, or some other productivity tool. Use that computer as a place to type something important to remember. Besides note-taking, a spreadsheet can be good for things, such as keeping track of income or expenses, planning out workflow, and more. The computer can be next to the main computer for editing. The audio engineer can leave applications open for easy and quick viewing. A productivity killer is to have to stop editing, minimize the Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), and pull up non-editing applications to view or note something. The audio engineer minimizes or closes the application and opens up the DAW again to continue working. That increases the time that editing can take. That old computer is making that whole process quicker. If there is a portable storage device available, that opens up the option to transfer items between the two computers without the need for internet. Another option is that, depending on compatibility, the old computer can act as a second screen for editing. It can help to mirror what is on one screen to another screen. The audio engineer can work out issues or discover a new perspective. Lastly, think about the resources and ram of the main editing computer. Fewer programs open is better for the speed of the computer. That does not mean the computer exceeds the limit of the processor speed. It does mean that the RAM splits between fewer programs and operations. Too many applications open at once can cause a computer to crash or operate slower. A slow response from a computer when trying to edit is frustrating. An application that can be run on another computer and free up RAM will ensure better responsiveness. The point is don’t discount the old computer that is put away in the closet. It may benefit in being a tool that increases efficiency and saves time for editing.
